Can You See the Misteak?

No, I’m not talking about typos.

I’m talking about human fallibility and our constant striving for perfection. Mistakes are at the heart of both.

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.”

I think this speaks to what makes us human – the fact that we will, no matter how good we are at something, make a mistake. We can’t be afraid of making a mistake, since it will happen. But we have to learn from the mistakes we make so they don’t happen again.

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.”

Most of us want to improve ourselves, to do something better than the way we did it before. But how do we find these better ways if not through trial and error? In making a mistake we learn from it what NOT to do, which moves us closer to the RIGHT thing to do.

All I’m saying is that it’s pointless to stress over making mistakes; they’re inevitable, they will happen, NO ONE is perfect. Media may make out our celebrities and athletes to be perfect and beautiful, but that’s only in their best moments – we have those too. We don’t see them (unless it’s in a tabloid) when they break a heel or flub an easy pass.

Reconcile yourself to the fact that you will make a mistake, but also promise to yourself that you will learn from it. Mistake is only another word for experience.

To avoid situations in which you might make mistakes may be the biggest mistake of all.”
